New materials and technologies allow them to fit more comfortably than ever before. However, don’t expect to go home and eat tacos right away. Here’s what you need to know to get used to eating with dentures.

Choose Soft Foods

It will take time for your gums, muscles, and jaw to get used to holding dentures in your mouth. Your gums may even become a little sore for a couple of days. It’s best to eat soft foods for at least a week or two. Choose foods that require minimal chewing.

Check Food Temperature

Your dentures can insulate your mouth, which means you may not know that a food or drink is too hot until it is too late. You can avoid accidental burns by temperature-checking foods and hot beverages.

Don’t Hold Hot Liquids in Your Mouth

Holding hot liquids in your mouth not only increases your risk of burns, but it can also damage your dentures. Hot liquids can cause your dentures to warp, which can cause them to fit improperly. This can weaken them over time and increase your risk of sores, inflammation, and jaw.

Chew Slowly and Evenly

You will need to practice chewing slowly and evenly. Cut your food into small pieces to make it easier to chew. Take your time when chewing and ensure the food is evenly distributed on both sides of your mouth. Chewing on one side can dislodge your dentures.

Introduce Your Regular Diet

As you get used to eating with your new set of teeth, you can reintroduce your regular diet. You can enjoy a variety of delicious foods without worrying about slipping or irritation.

Avoid Hard or Chewy Foods

Hard or chewy foods can damage your dentures over time. They also increase your risk of jaw and gum pain because of the repetitive motion needed to chew them. For this reason, you should also avoid sticky foods. If you can’t resist a juicy steak, cut it into small, manageable pieces to make it easier to chew.

The saying is true, practice makes perfect. Although it may take a few weeks to get used to your dentures, in no time at all, you may forget they aren’t your real teeth. Don’t forget to rinse your dentures after eating and brush them at least once a day. Place them in an overnight soaking solution to remove food residue and bacteria your toothbrush couldn’t reach.

If eating becomes more difficult, or your dentures start slipping, it’s time to contact your dentist to have them relined. Regular adjustments will help your dentures continue to fit comfortably and extend their lifespan.
