If you’ve been recommended a root canal by your dentist, it’s natural to feel scared. But the good news is that root canals are actually very common, and very misunderstood. In fact, when it comes to this beneficial treatment, there’s nothing to be afraid of. Here are some popular misconceptions, and the truth about root canals!

Misconception #1: They’re Painful

The great news about root canals is that they’re not painful. In fact, your tooth will be numbed for the procedure, so you shouldn’t feel a thing. While you may have pain prior to the treatment due to your infected tooth, the root canal itself should not hurt, and once it’s done, you should gradually begin to feel better over the next few days and weeks.

Misconception #2: They Cause Cancer

This is one of those internet rumors that spread like wildfire but have no basis in reality. It began following a documentary where the filmmaker claimed a root canal caused their cancer.  Thankfully, numerous studies have shown that not only do they not do this, but one even found that patients who had undergone multiple endodontic treatments had a 45 percent lower risk of developing cancer!

Misconception #3: A Tooth Extraction is Better

Your dentist’s priority is always to save your natural teeth if possible. Thus, if you can benefit from a root canal over requiring an extraction, they will always err on the side of preservation. A root canal clears away infection and decay and will allow you to save and use your tooth for a lifetime without needing to have it extracted and replaced with a prosthetic.

Misconception #4: They Kill Your Tooth

During your root canal, your dentist will open the tooth and remove the infected pulp, replacing it with a synthetic material called gutta percha. This not only prevents further infection, but it also maintains the strength and viability of the tooth, so it’s not dead. The tooth doesn’t actually need the pulp to stay alive; it can survive on the surrounding tissue!

Remember, there’s a lot of rumors out there about root canals, but the truth is that they’re very safe, effective, and beneficial to your smile. If you have any questions or concerns about your treatment, speak to your dentist for further information.
